As mentioned earlier, one of the reasons we choose out hotel was the free shuttle service. However, this restricts you to the parks. At some point you are going to want to break free and explore Orlando. In our case we wanted to go to the Kennedy Space Centre. To do this you are going to want to rent a car.
a week into the trip we rented a car from Enterprise car hire because it was the cheapest. After signing up at the desk I made our way out to the parking lot. After getting the keys the attendant asked me "You want insurance with that." Coming from Australia where insurance is covered in the rental cost my response was "what the.... I thought it was covered in the rental. Do you mean I could drive out of here with out insurance." His reply, "Yeah sure man." At this point I had already paid for the non refundable car rental so had no choice but to sign up in the car park for the $32.00 dollar a day insurance. The moral of the story when you are planning to rent a car in America, ask how much the insurance is so you don't suddenly have to make an expensive decision in the car park.
Driving on the wrong side of the road from the wrong side of the car out of a major airport was some what of a challenge. Before going there I downloaded the free Florida 'Nav Free' app on the Iphone. This took the navigation problem out of the equation. For the first day I found it easier to follow cars to make sure I went into the right lane at intersections. So if I was coming up to an intersection I would slow up and let a car get ahead of me then follow it through and intersection.
The driving issue that I couldn't get over for our whole stay in America was the fact that when driving you are use to seeing the right side of the lane right next to you. If I wasn't concentrating the car would drift over into the break down lane resulting in my wife yelling at me to watch what I was doing.
The only other issue was the occasional instance when you would jump into the right side of the car and realize there was no steering wheel in front of you. followed by you getting out and walking to the other side of the car.
